The Core Skills
Development Programme

This six-month programme supports the first part of the Core Humanitarian Competencies Framework and covers the essential competencies of humanitarian programming including:

  • humanitarian principles
  • NGO and Red Cross Code of Conduct
  • important areas of projects and activities
  • good working practices

Suitable participants are existing national staff in countries or regions involved in emergency response programmes, from any discipline or support function, who have not previously been on a humanitarian training course.
The course is structured around ‘learning by doing’, with ongoing reinforcement through reflection and feedback.
Having successfully completed the course, participants will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the humanitarian system and key standards
  • Confidence and the ability to apply humanitarian principles and standards in the country context
  • Practical skills to deliver timely and quality humanitarian programmes
  • Ability to manage oneself in a high-pressure, changing environment
  • A clear plan for personal ongoing learning and development
  • ┬áStrong team player skills
