Coaching the Participants

Coaching is an essential part of the Context learning programmes; it strengthens the overall learning process and helps participants by encouraging them to:

  • set and reach higher goals
  • focus on actions and priorities
  • be challenged to achieve more

Coaching can also support individuals in coaching their own teams, thereby creating wider benefit and helping to promote the technique across agencies.

Coaching requires commitment in time and resources and, while coaching can be provided by available agency staff or fellow participants (on a sister programme, for example), it is a specific skill, and efforts need to be made to find, or invest in, the right people.

The coaching component enhances Context programmes by:

  • Signalling if a participant is falling behind
  • Providing an alternative feedback route - external coaches can gather general comment on course effectiveness and transmit it to facilitators, this strengthens monitoring and evaluation, without compromising the confidential nature of the relationship between the coach and coachee.

Chapter 8 of the Programme Guide covers the activity and set-up of this key activity extensively.
